Thorns and berries

This was an old post, needed to see it tonight to remind me how far I’ve come and to not lose sight of the berries despite some thorns.

“Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us.”
-Voltaire
Another sweltering day in NJ, my on again off again numbness is now accompanied by random short-circuiting nerves that feel like bee-stings. I used to dwell on each sting and dread the next, but several years ago I learned that by focusing instead on any other inch of my body the pain would lessen and my outlook improved too. Met friends for breakfast this morning and we strolled through Morristown. Our slower pace allowed me to notice some historic signs on South Street describing former farms and homes. As one of us banked the other suggested walking down a side street she loves that I never noticed before, Headley Road. Enjoyed the majestic homes, the bits of shade along the sidewalk and a bush of very few berries protected by very many thorns. Funny thing when you look for berries you hardly notice the thorns, but once you see the thorns it’s difficult to unsee them until you spot a berry. Today may you dwell on the berries in your path and pass quickly through the thorns.
