Hidden treasure(s)

Reeves Reed Arboretum is located on a historic estate at 165 Hobart Avenue in Summit. It’s in a residential neighborhood with a gate that slowly rolls open as you approach, a narrow driveway that leads to a small parking lot. More than thirteen acres, six of which are woodlands with a mile of trails. There are formal, historic gardens as well as contemporary ones. Today I got there as it opened and slowly made my way around the grounds pausing at the immaculately tended rose garden that has yet to bloom and the herb garden which is already full of large, luscious herbs. There are several benches tucked throughout the grounds and on the trails, perfect for reading, reflecting, or quiet conversations. Although the house and grounds feel rather elegant every now and then you’ll discover striking modern art sculptures and the juxtaposition of old and new highlights both. With so many beautiful areas you’ll almost always see people having portraits taken. Today a toddler in a long, flowing dress pranced through one of the gardens posing and spinning. One of the highlights here is the daffodil bowl with thousands of bulbs, they’ve already bloomed but a few remained. There are water features including a small fish pond. The house is stunning and the visitor center, education center, and greenhouse are highlights too. Currently opened daily with limited hours from 1-7, all buildings are temporarily closed. They update their social media and website often so be sure to check before you go.
