A wHole in one

Sometimes a walk in an unexpected place can clear your thoughts and help you focus on one step at a time. It can inspire you to think of yourself and your surroundings in a new way, to tend the parts of you that feel broken, reminding you are perfectly imperfect. Whole. Tucked behind Central Park sports complex in Morris Plains is an old park brought back to life. Volunteers created a park devoted to disc golf, but designed it in such a way that the course fades into the background. I’ve never played but frequently walk there, enjoying the crunch of the gravel path around a pond, as well as well maintained trails that cross over streams, climbing up into the woods. There are many benches along the way, some of the tallest evergreens around, and interesting architectural details like a bridge to nowhere, an abandoned brick building, and a dramatic old drainage canal system. Pretty year-round.

IF you go keep an eye out for disc golfers on the trail, it’s so peaceful and quiet there you’ll likely hear them before you hear them. Pause if they’re mid-round, or it’s been my experience they pause to let walkers pass. More often than not they’re practicing distance throws in the meadow which is the last Hole.
